A Million Jobs By 2010?
After information technology, India is emerging as a global hub for biotechnology. The Indian biotech industry, excluding the organised pharmaceutical and drug manufacturing companies, reported revenues in excess of $1 bn in 2005-06. Encouraged, the government has prepared a draft biotech strategy to provide a clear roadmap to the industry for 10 years. The draft strategy has tried to take a holistic look at the current scenario and has suggested several measures and timeframes to promote innovation and manufacturing. The declared goals are to create world-class human capital, build quality infrastructure, and address the basic needs of society. All this would be aimed at logging $5 bn and generating a million jobs by 2010. “There is a shortage of people with the appropriate research and development skills. In clinical research outsourcing, we have to recruit for the focus area of research,” said Dr Kashmira Pagdiwalla, director (HR operations) at Intas Biopharmaceuticals. A survey FICCI found that the shortage of doctorate and post-doctorate scientists in biotech at a worrying 80 pct.
 
TCS, Infosys, Wipro Are The Top Three Employers
IT services major Tata Consultancy Services, followed by Infosys Technologies and Wipro, are the top three employers among IT-ITES companies in 2006-07, according Nasscom. HCL Technologies and Cognizant were rated fourth and fifth in the top-20 list, a Nasscom release said here. Satyam Computer Services, Hewlett Packard, Genpact, Oracle and Intelnet Global Services completed the top ten list. Others in the top-20 pecking order include WNS Global Services, Mphasis, Patni Computers, Convergys and First Source. “The top-20 companies collectively employ over 5-lakh people of the 1.6 million employed directly in the industry. The rankings are based on the India-based headcount of firms with IT-ITES operations in India, as reported to Nasscom in its annual survey,” the release said.
 
Mr Mike Webb Is New Aricent V-P, CIO
Telecom software provider Aricent on Monday appointed Mr Mike Webb as Vice-President and Chief Information Officer. Earlier, he worked with lextronics International and Symantec Corporation and Hewlett Packard.
 
Ministry For Skill Development In Micro, Small, Medium Sector
The Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises has laid special emphasis on skill development through imparting technical and vocational education to the workforce to ensure the growth of MSME sector in the country. Dr Chandrapal, Secretary in the Ministry, said here while inaugurating a workshop on employment generation that available data suggested that the percentage of population undergoing vocational training in the country was much lower than in other developing countries. In this context, the objective of the Ministry was to increase the skilled workforce from 5 pct as of now to 50 pct as desired by the Prime Minister, he said. Dr Chandrapal pointed out that the proactive involvement of Indian industry was imperative in every aspect of skill development so that skill creation was made demand-driven and relevant to the emerging market opportunities. The Ministry is targeting that in each block one product should be identified and 50 to 100 boys and girls should be given training in it.The associations will impress upon their member companies to impart practical training to a minimum of 20 pct of the workforce employed in each unit. For achieving this goal, there is need for creation of large employment opportunities and the National Minimum Programme has also recognised it.
 
Mr Nirvik Singh Appointed CEO In G2
Mr Nirvik Singh will be expanding his responsibilities within Grey Worldwide and has been appointed CEO, G2 Asia Pacific, in addition to his role as President of Grey Group South/South-East Asia. In his capacity as Regional CEO for G2, Mr Nirvik will have managerial and P&L responsibility for the G2 business line, reporting to Mr Joe Celia, Vice-Chairman, Grey Group Chairman & CEO, G2 Worldwide, and will continue to work with Grey Group Asia Pacific Chairman & CEO, Mr Mike Amour.
 
New Role For Mr Dabral At Bates Asia
Creative Director Mr Sonal Dabral will join Bates Asia in a dual capacity of Regional Executive Creative Director, Asia Pacific, and Chairman, Bates David Enterprise, India, from October 2007. Mr Sonal will work closely with the India Chief Executive Officer, Mr Subhash Kamath. Mr Sonal replaces the current Chairman, Mr Mohammad Khan, who is retiring from the agency.

The new income tax returns are meant to be easy and simple to fill in especially for individuals.
